This presidential election may be a decisive one in American culture and history as a whole. With gas prices rising, the economy weakening, and international relations “on the fence”, who should we vote for?
Living in Massachusetts is hard enough, considering I’m more moderate to somewhat conservative. Mostly because I think that too many liberal people spend too much money on programs we do not need, and cost tax payers a lot of money. Working for a state job this summer, I know a lot of time can be wasted on the most miniscule things.
The most important issues this election are (in no specific order): The economy, immigration, oil dependence, foreign affairs (the worlds perception of us, the forces in Iraq) and the national debt.
The economy is doing very poor right now. Are we in a recession? That’s up for debate, but what I do know is that it affects EVERYONE. We need to stop buying stuff from china, and become dependent on ourselves again. So what if we spend a little more for US made goods, that money stays here in the US and helps our economy. Buy local, do your part. We can’t have the rest of the world have a say in a large portion of our economy, namely China.
Immigration is another big issue. Why haven’t we done something to stop people from crossing the borders. Not only do these people come, and take jobs away from the economy (jobs that students like I would have) but some bring drugs to sell. We might even have terrorists come over these same boundaries to attack us. It’s irresponsible not to have a plan, fence, U2 spy planes, or just something in place, to stop this.
Why do we still depend on oil so much? Why do car manufacturers continue to build SUVs and trucks that the normal consumer does not need. You don’t need a truck or SUV to go shopping, either for food or other products. These people pollute, waste gas, and drive agressively in these vehicles. (A generalization, I know, but still)
How does the world see us? I’m not exactly sure, and I think it would be a great study to run around the world. I think we need to leave Iraq well enough alone. We can’t make up people’s minds for them. Let the country decide how it wants to be run, as opposed to trying to control the world.
The national debt is also a huge problem. We need to start repaying the government, so we actually have money for many services that are required. More and more money is getting poured into foreign governments. We need to stop that, and get the government working for the common people.
So who do I recommend voting for? I do not recommend Barack Obama, as he has little experience. I do not think he will bring the right kind of change to America. John Mccain is also a poor choice. He seems to have lost it.
I am hoping Mccain gets a great vice president. Mccain is pretty old, and may soon become unfit to run the country. Maybe the vice president could do a great job.
We will have to see where to go with Decision 2008.
